
Let me quickly defend the actual oil of snakes: Once, it was a more or less reputable natural remedy for arthritis. Oil was squeegeed out of a previously living snake, then rubbed across the sore joint; one recent report supports its possible efficacy. I will leave it to the Freudians to explain why this particular "cure" became a euphemism for all flavors of sham medicine.
