 | The titles, Day and Night, probably allude to Michelangelo's famous figures in the Laurentian Library in Florence, but I'm also reminded of the twinned Buddhist deities, mouth open and mouth closed, that guard temples in Japan. López's remarkable 10-foot heads, which currently are placed outside the Museum of Fine Arts, will eventually be placed, in slightly larger castings, at the entrance to the Atocha train station as a memorial, on a scale rivaling Guernica, to the nearly 200 people who lost their lives there in the al-Qaida terrorist bombings of 2004. These heads will also mark the beginning and culmination of Antonio López García's own personal journey, from his arrival at Atocha as an ambitious 13-year-old to his current stature as perhaps Spain's greatest living artist. | |
