
Note: I found this wonderful Greenlandic word in an amazing book—Defiant Gardens: Making Gardens in Wartime by University of Oregon landscape architecture professor Kenneth I. Helphand. The note about Greenland is a lighthearted touch in a touching volume of stories (and heartbreaking photos) of people gardening behind the trenches in World War I, in the Warsaw Ghetto, in World War II prison camps, and during the Gulf War.
