
In 2002, Republican voters scorned the gubernatorial bid of ex-Los Angeles Mayor Dick Reardon and chose William Simon Jr., son of the one-time treasury secretary and perhaps the only person who could have lost to Gray Davis. Davis was recalled a year later by the voters, who chose Arnold Schwarzenegger to replace him.
