In 1796, one Boston paper warned that the elder Adams, if elected, would try to install his "well born" sons as "Lords of this country," while Jefferson, with "daughters only," could be trusted. Another campaign tract reminded voters that "Adams has Sons who might aim to succeed to their father. Jefferson, like Washington, has no Son."
