 | "Collective resilience" is a nice sentiment. Too bad Web culture has a way of taking things to the next level. The straight-ahead 2 Girls 1 Cup reaction video was quickly passé. Soon there were parodies involving Kermit the Frog, then Kermit showing the video to Rowlf the dog, then tribute songs, then Inside the Actor's Studio skits. But the most alarming innovation was getting a grandmother involved. (For every generation there is a gap, but never before has it been streamed on YouTube.) The grandmother's horrid reaction is very funny, yet also shameful. She throws into relief the degrading pointlessness of the whole fad. A resolution: Let's not get pre-Internet people involved in our sick games. In the grandmother's parting words, I hear unwitting advice for those of us enamored with our screens, webcams, and hit counts: "What's wrong with you?" and, more acutely, "You need to talk to someone." | | | |
