Like many Internet phenomena, the reaction video was inspired by multiple things. YouTube encourages its users to "Post a video response" to what they watch. Typically, these consist of some guy with a Webcam saying, "Hey, I really liked your video, nice work," although on occasion the response is more clever, such as responding to a parody with another variation on that parody. The Internet also has a surprisingly long tradition of shock sites that feature a disgusting image or interactive trick. One of the more innocent examples of this is the Scary Maze Game. The video at right is one of many imitators of the original Scary Maze Game video, which inspired people to film their family and friends getting jolted. It's not a far conceptual leap to showing 2 Girls 1 Cup to a friend and recording the reaction as "response." This reaction video claims to be the first.
