
Eventually, Hyde earned himself a professorship at Kenyon College. He filled other roles, too. His essay "Alcohol & Poetry: John Berryman and the Booze Talking," published in 1975 in the American Poetry Review when Hyde was 30, "grew out of his experiences as an alcoholism counselor." Because of The Gift, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1991.
