In the aftermath of the Times-Union report, many have wondered why entertainers would be using human growth hormone or anabolic steroids. Sure, muscle-bound rappers like 50 Cent and Timbaland have a marketable brand in their beefed-up physiques. But what about Mary J. Blige?

It would make more sense for Blige to use HGH than testosterone—the former would be more likely to improve her muscle tone without creating biceps of obscene proportions. Some "anti-aging" doctors also prescribe women small doses of testosterone to improve their sex drive, mood, and fitness. (Women who undergo surgically induced menopause might also be candidates for testosterone treatment.)

It's also true that both male and female professional vocalists inject themselves with corticosteroids to speed recovery from acute laryngitis. But corticosteroids have a very different effect from anabolic steroids. Female singers who shoot up with testosterone risk acquiring a deeper and more masculine voice.
