Former Pakistani Prime Minster Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday at a political rally near Islamabad. She had returned to Pakistan in October after an eight-year exile. On Nov. 9—a day that Bhutto spent under house arrest—Slate and Magnum Photos published a gallery of photos marking the anniversary of Bhutto's election as prime minister in 1988. Bhutto served as prime minister from 1988-90 and again from 1993-96 and was the first woman elected to lead an Islamic nation. (View the photos by clicking the launch module to the left.)
