Former Pakistani Prime Minster Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday at a political rally near Islamabad. She had returned to Pakistan in October after an eight-year exile. On Nov. 9—a day that Bhutto spent under house arrest— Slate and Magnum Photos published a gallery of photos marking the anniversary of Bhutto’s election as prime minister in 1988.
