Depression leads to a substantial level of disability. In a worldwide study of almost a quarter-million people conducted by the World Health Organization, depression by itself or in combination with other chronic diseases like asthma, arthritis, and diabetes caused a greater negative effect on health than any of these other common chronic diseases.
