The transcript was published by El País, Spain's highest-circulation daily, on Sept. 25. It was, of course, in Spanish. The conversation, which took place on Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, was in English. So, El País (or whichever Spanish official leaked it to the paper) translated the transcript into Spanish. The English text that I'm quoting is a translation of that translation. In other words, the quotations might not be precise. (Then again, given the long record of English-Spanish translations and the vast numbers of people fluent in both languages, the text is probably very close.) It is as yet unknown who transcribed the conversation or whether the transcription is completely accurate. However, the Washington Post published a story about the subject today, and, as yet, nobody in the White House has sought to discredit it.
