No Reservations is an almost beat-for-beat remake of Mostly Martha. As a relationship comedy, No Reservations is kind of clay-footed—Zeta-Jones doesn't capture the electric anxiety of Martina Gedeck's Martha, and Aaron Eckhart's Italophile chef never gets beyond annoying to me. But as a slice-of-life restaurant movie, it does better than most. While Big Night, Mostly Martha, and Spanglish all suffer from a stillness in the kitchen, the restaurant in No Reservations looks like it might be in business with its layered kitchen, cramped quarters, and crowded burners. Sound helps too, as Zeta-Jones and her cooks bark out orders, sometimes in Spanish. And they're not cooking in polished copper. While some restaurants may pride themselves on their copper collection, for the most part, our meals are cooked in steel or crappy aluminum pans. But all this kitchen realism doesn't necessarily make for a convincing story, even with adorable Abigail Breslin playing cupid for the bickering chefs.
