 | Alas, that's the exception. More often rappers follow 50's lead, using videos to show off their earthly possessions. When producers Scott Storch and Timbaland dueled this spring, Storch—who resembles a large baby—filmed a bafflingly bad video of himself and his friends rapping and roughhousing in his enormous Miami home. The artless, poorly lit shots make everything— the Bentley, the yacht, the nice rugs, and the tailored suits—look laughably cheap. There is a difference between artful boasts—"I've got money stacks bigger than you," Jay-Z once told the diminutive duo Mobb Deep—and merely showing off. And if you are going to show off, there's a further difference between hiring Hype Williams to shoot your video and deferring to a talented cousin. | | | |
