 | McGinley's most recent body of work, exhibited at Team Gallery in January, focuses on crowds of fans at Morrissey concerts. Over the course of two years, McGinley, a devoted fan himself, followed the British singer on tour, shooting at more than 200 shows around the world. Bathed in blue, yellow, and magenta lights, the young fans appear mesmerized by the spectacle before them. Frozen in a state of ecstatic absorption, they mostly ignore McGinley's camera. The photographs successfully capture the heady mix of religious fervor, sexual longing, and hero worship that electrifies the air at live rock shows. What McGinley has to say about this phenomenon—if anything—is unclear. But as evocations of mood and atmosphere, these images have an emotional intensity that his earlier pictures often lack. | |
