The post was in part Iglesias' consolation prize for being the losing Republican candidate for New Mexico attorney general in 2000. The winner in that race was Patricia Madrid, who six years later would be the Democratic challenger to Republican Rep. Heather Wilson in the election that would get Iglesias fired.
