 | After I Can Has Cheezburger? posted the original happycat photo, lolcat fans responded by riffing on the idea with new twists of their own. Haunted by happycat, I contacted "cheezburger," who runs I Can Has Cheezburger? with his partner "tofuburger." He's not sure, but he thinks that happycat originated on a Russian cat-food box. He and tofuburger started the site "as a kind of joke," but now it gets more than a quarter-million hits per day, and purportedly uses up one-third of the bandwidth on the blogging network WordPress.com. Both of them have day jobs and look through the 100 to 300 daily submissions of lolcats in their free time. Cheezburger, something of an anonymous Web agent, requested that his name and location not be revealed. When asked why the site is so popular, he offers an accurate verbal shrug: "It's the Internet." | | | |
