Our gene-bearing chromosomes come in pairs, so, in general, we have two copies of every gene. Mostly the genes are identical from person to person, but sometimes (as in the case of the FTO gene) a number of variations naturally occur. People with two identical variants of the same gene—one on each of the paired chromosomes—are homozygous, for those who have forgotten their high school biology.
