Dr. Tung says that some breast cancer protection may come from nursing, which delays the restoration of ovulatory cycles in many women. It also causes an increase in a hormone called prolactin and may decrease estrogen, which might reduce risk. Nursing might even act to cleanse the ducts of atypical cells, Tung adds.
