 | In September of last year, a Slovenian university student wrote a Flash game that was, essentially, a pencil and a blank white screen. You drew lines with the pencil, and, after pressing a play button, a little guy on a sled attempted to ride down the slopes and valleys that you had created. The game, Line Rider, soon went viral, and now versions are being prepared for the PlayStation and the Wii. I'm not sure if this movie counts as machinima, but it provides an elegant example of economy and style. With a few simple tools and a well-chosen soundtrack, the clip evokes the suaveness of James Bond and the courage of Evel Knievel. It also underscores a point that applies beyond the bounds of machinima: Grabbing hold of the tools of technology is easy, using them with originality is hard. | | | |
