This might explain why Bialobrzeski never threatened litigation. But why haven't artists rallied to his side? The answer, in part, is that the line between "inspired by" and "copied from" is fuzzy: Photographers seldom reproduce, shot-for-shot, the works of their forebears, but they often toy with similar approaches and subject matter. For example, the granddaddy of the modern Southern gothic, William Eggleston, shot this picture for his famed "Los Alamos" project and admirers—including up-and-comer Christian Patterson—have been shooting the pinned-up hair on the back of women's heads ever since.
