One of the more ambitious attempts to address the Iraq war is the Web comic Shooting War by Anthony Lappé. Set in 2011, Shooting War follows Jimmy Burns, a left-wing videoblogger. Sent to Iraq to cover the bogged-down (and still ongoing) war effort, Burns is used by a terrorist cell called the Sword of Mohammed to get their message to the world.
Vividly drawn by Dan Goldman, Shooting War is a sharp-edged and believable look at the future of Iraq, America, and war journalism. In Shooting War's 2011, most networks have pulled out of Iraq to tell the stories of terrorist bombings in America, and videoblogger Burns has the run of the place. So it's a shame that Lappé's plot is so over the top, full of sex, kidnappings, and an outlandish military deus ex machina. Hopefully, Lappé will remedy this in the expanded Shooting War book, which Warner Books is publishing in 2007 as the first title in its new graphic novel line.
