
The disease got its name because it is the fifth in a list of children's illnesses that cause rashes so distinctive that the disease can be identified by the appearance of the rash alone. The Fifth Disease rash begins with a striking "slapped cheek" appearance followed by a netlike rash on other parts of the body.
