Acid-tolerant bacteria may not be the only things that increase the risk that infectious bacteria will pass safely through the barrier of the human stomach. Every supermarket now sells vast amounts of medications designed to decrease the acidity of the stomach and improve all of the GI symptoms that TV ads warn us about. I have long suspected that all these medicines are contributing to the risk of developing infections like E. coli O157:H7.
