
E. coli types are mainly defined by chemical structures detected on the surface of the bacterial cell and on the flagella, the rotating whiplike structures responsible for bacterial movement. E. coli "O157:H7" corresponds to type 157 of the more than 170 known surface ("O") options and type 7 of the more than 50 known flagellar ("H") options.
