Billy: Hey, man. All we represent to them, man, is somebody who needs a haircut.
George Hanson: Oh, no. What you represent to them is freedom.
—Easy Rider, 1969
We all know that freedom has enemies, lots and lots of enemies. These days, we're told, it's Islamofascists who hate our freedom. But on our latest Slate bad-movie podcast, we revisit an era when freedom had equally odious antagonists: the squares.
Our bad-movie guy, Mark Jordan Legan, returns with memories and clips from a particularly rich vein of cinematic castoffs: bad biker movies of the 1960s and '70s. It's an entire genre of films about the youth of America taking to the road, stickin' it to The Man, getting loaded, and being free. And whatever you may think of the genre's best-known example, the movies we discuss make Easy Rider look like Citizen Kane.
