The Slate Group is looking for a sales marketing director. As one of the most influential and widely read news and culture brands, Slate combines the innovation of a Web-only property with the quality and authority you'd expect from an organization owned by The Washington Post Company. With more than 6 million uniques monthly, Slate is the centerpiece of an expanding family of sites including The Root, Slate V, The Big Money, and, most recently Foreign Policy. In addition to growing our existing sites, The Slate Group is launching a series of new Web properties that leverage our experience, success, and existing audience.

The Director of Marketing will work directly with the publisher to support advertising sales by raising the profile of Slate and The Slate Group sites among target advertising agencies and clients. Success is when advertisers are as passionate about Slate as our audience is. Candidate is responsible for developing a marketing strategy that leverages our digital reach, live events, sales materials, trade advertising, and robust in-house creative and research teams. This is a unique opportunity for a creative marketer to join an entrepreneurial team of editors, designers, developers, and sales professionals to further grow some of the most compelling and fast-growing brands on the Web.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop effective brand messaging and positioning strategies
  • Oversee development of marketing collateral and sales materials
  • Interface with sales and business leaders to ensure alignment of strategy for all campaigns
  • Train sales representatives
  • Coordinate and leverage shared services from research, events, and PR teams
  • Measure and refine programs/campaign
  • Design and implement relationship management program with key advertisers
  • Analyze competition (features/pricing/timing/materials) to maximize ongoing marketing practices

The ideal candidate would have the following traits:

  • Creative and entrepreneurial as well as organized and detail-oriented
  • Five years developing and managing marketing programs targeting advertising agencies and clients
  • Passion for and experience with strong media brands
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of best practices for Internet marketing
  • Experience working with research and data to tell brand stories
  • Contacts in advertising community a plus
