Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. Kennedy was celebrating his victory in California's presidential primary.
The number of firearm-related homicides in the United States has since doubled. In 1998 the Centers for Disease Control found that the rate of firearm-related death in the U.S. was eight times greater than in comparably wealthy nations.
