 | The first sound version of Frankenstein was James Whale's Hollywood film of 1931. Like its 1910 predecessor, it was about the dangers of playing God. The "monster" had a large cranium, a bolt through his neck, and surgical scars. In the novel, he had been described as "beautiful." No more. The success of this film version led to an avalanche of imitations in the 1930s, often with medical themes. This photo, of the actor Glenn Strange, comes from one of those sequels. | |
