Even if Pride & Prejudice wins, I won't mind: Jacqueline Durran's costumes are intelligent and revealing. When the Bennet girls attend local balls, their finery looks shabby. The difference between it and their hostesses' helps illuminate the Bennets' financial woes as no earlier adaptation has done. Next year, though, I hope the academy voters will nominate a few corset-free films. It's time to loosen up.
