
There are more than 300,000 hip fractures a year in the United States. Osteoporosis (the loss of calcium that leads to bone weakness) is the major contributor to this injury in the elderly. Elderly patients heal poorly and slowly. Hip fractures often lead to loss of mobility and loss of independence and can help lead to premature death.
