In the Gospels, readers meet two groups of Jewish leaders, the Sadducees and the Pharisees. Though generally at odds with one another, both wanted to trip up Jesus. The historical sources that tell us about the Sadducees are the Talmud, the New Testament, and the writings of the historian Josephus. The Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke record the story of Sadducees "who say there is no resurrection" attempting to trick Jesus. They ask him about a woman who has survived seven husbands—whose wife will she be in heaven? Jesus tells them, "At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage." Here's the Jewish Encyclopedia entry on the Sadducees.
