What the hell is a "Campanis moment"?

A "Campanis moment" comes when a non-bigot says something regrettably racist while speaking extemporaneously. I coined the term earlier this week in honor of former Los Angeles Dodger General Manager Al Campanis, a good man. Campanis brought his career to a premature end when he appeared on Nightline in 1987 and explained that blacks might not have "some of the necessities" it takes to manage a major league team or run it as a general manager for the same reason black people aren't "good swimmers." They lack "buoyancy," Campanis said.
