
The skeptics note that in preliminary trials, it took 12 times as much of the experimental avian flu vaccine, compared to the amount in our annual flu shot, to achieve the level of immunity for which we traditionally strive. This interpretation of the data suggests that the present vaccine stockpile will be enough to protect only about 450,000 people—not much if the disease becomes highly contagious for people and is as dangerous as we think it will be.
