For people who do not take issue with embryo use or whose religious scruples are overcome by a desperate need to fix a medical problem, it can seem like a sin not to use embryos for human benefit. As a byproduct of in vitro fertilization methods, many fertilized eggs or early embryos sit in laboratory freezers, no longer needed for assisted reproduction use. If not used for stem-cell research or therapy, these cells are discarded.
