The hope of therapeutic cloning is that individualized therapies can be made for people suffering from afflictions including diabetes, spinal cord injuries, or Parkinson's disease. In therapeutic cloning, the nucleus of a human egg is replaced with the nucleus of a somatic cell removed from the patient. From the resulting embryo are extracted stem cells that can be grown into replacement nerve cells, heart cells, or pancreas cells, the beauty of which is that they are genetically matched and therefore compatible with the patient's own immune system.
