According an excellent profile by John Freeman in the March/April 2005 Poets & Writers, Gilbert and Allen Ginsberg often argued about what made a poem; when Ginsberg finished writing the opening pages of "Howl," he sought out Gilbert, then living in Sausalito, and read them to him. By Freeman's account, Gilbert responded, "Finally, this is really beautiful, wonderful stuff."
