
I should clarify: The $419 billion is simply for the Defense Department. If you add the money requested by the Department of Energy for research, development, production, and maintenance of nuclear bombs and warheads—which is how the Office of Management and Budget calculates "military budget authority"—the figure comes to $428 billion. This does not include any money for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's covered in the supplemental. Nor does it include at least $10 billion that's been tucked away into the supplemental for long-term programs that have nothing directly to do with the costs of those wars.
