
In addition to PLoS, there is a group called BioMed Central, which publishes over 100 open-access journals, none of them particularly prestigious. And there are a handful of established venues, including the well-regarded Journal of Clinical Investigation, which have adopted the author-pays model and make content immediately available online and for free. Still, these open-access forums represent only a tiny fraction of the health sciences literature.
