In 1991, Paul Ginsparg, then a physicist at Los Alamos, began an online archive of pre-publication papers by other physicists to facilitate the exchange of new research. Ginsparg's archive has since grown exponentially, both in size and significance, to include new work in physics, math, computer science, and quantitative biology.
