Anchor Away!Dan Rather's leaving the Evening News.
Posted Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at 3:41 PM ETThe CBS network announced today that Dan Rather will resign in March. This past September, the anchor's reputation took a nose dive when he cited military documents that raised questions about President Bush's service in the National Guard and those documents turned out to be frauds. When Rather eventually apologized for his error, 10 days after the problematic story aired, Slate's Jack Shafer asked: "What took you so long?" And in this "Assessment" of the newsman, Bryan Curtis cleared up a few misconceptions: "Rather isn't a liberal hack. He's bonkers."
