The Electoral College renders the vast majority of Americans irrelevant in presidential elections, since it is presumptively clear which party will prevail in their states. One Democrat from Spring, Texas, says on VotePair.org that he never even registered to vote since voting for Kerry and other Democratic presidential candidates is "totally futile." He speaks for the frustration of tens of millions of Americans, including millions of Republicans in California, New York, and Massachusetts. Some of the most dissatisfied are Democrats in Utah, who could muster only 26 percent of the vote for Gore in 2000 and last won a presidential election 40 years ago. Thus, vote-pairing has taken off like a jumbo jet in Utah, with thousands signing up, including the Democratic Mayor of Salt Lake City, Rocky Anderson. A VotePair registrant from Cedar City, Utah, wrote in to say: "Once I realized how the Electoral College affects voting and that I live in a Republican state, I quit voting. 12 years later I have now decided to vote. … Thank you for giving back my right to vote and have it count."
