I Am Your CourtThe Supreme Court finally takes up the Ten Commandments.
Posted Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at 12:00 PM ET
This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a pair of cases that questions the constitutionality of monuments to the Ten Commandments displayed on public land. The high court has largely ignored the patchwork of cases that have been decided across the country over the past few decades—even though different courts have come to vastly different and confusing results. Two years ago, Laura Hodes put together a slide show featuring some of the contested displays around the country, along with explanations for why various courts had ruled as they did. One of the cases on appeal asks whether a monument in Austin, Texas, is permissible—a photo of that monument is featured here.
