A female suicide bomber blew herself up today, killing eight people and injuring at least 34 outside a Moscow subway station. Almost exactly a week earlier, two Russian planes crashed within moments of each other, in what authorities believe to have been suicide attacks by two female Chechen sympathizers. Female suicide bombers allegedly connected with Chechen rebels have been responsible for multiple attacks throughout Russia in recent years. Two years ago, in "Foreigners," Anne Applebaum explored the significance of young women willing to blow themselves up for a cause.
