
As suggested by the title, the methodology on this "back of the envelope" chart yields only an approximation of real returns. Specifically, with these assumptions, the impact of inflation would actually be slightly greater than that shown here (i.e., the real return would be lower). The pre-inflation returns will also vary depending on the timing of the application of fees, costs, and taxes. The methodology is useful for providing a quick snapshot, however.
