As the book carcasses piled up, so did the librarians' frustration. Not only was a blade-wielding stranger lurking in the library, but many of the ruined books were irreplaceable. Finally, in April 2001, librarian Nancy Silverrod decided to devote her day off to playing Nancy Drew, staking out the library's third floor where the vandal liked to dump the desecrated books. While pretending to read, Silverrod noticed a nondescript man in a brown suit walk by carrying a book with a bright-pink cover. She followed the man as he disappeared into the shelves and then found Becoming Visible—An Illustrated History of Lesbian and Gay Life in Twentieth-Century America, bearing the same pink cover, on a bottom shelf. Sure enough, it had been destroyed. The vandal was soon arrested, and the librarians heaved a collective sigh of relief. Silverrod donated her $500 reward to help replace the damaged books.
