The Rolling Stones' first nationwide TV appearance was in June 1964, on ABC's Hollywood Palace. The host that night, I remember, was a very drunk Dean Martin, who clearly hated them. He made merciless fun of their slovenly appearances and their street-tough style. It was the first clear sign that the Rat Pack swingers were square.
