You see them everywhere in Sierra Leone: children who fashion their own roadblocks out of string in an effort to get vehicles to stop and give them money. It's an eerie reminder of the rebel "checkpoints" that were still in existence two years ago, places where people would be lucky to pass with their lives. These boys usually wait until the very last minute before dropping their cord as vehicles go by. They seem to play games of chicken with some of the U.N. drivers who speed up as they head toward the make-believe authorities, waving as they pass. Although we never saw a vehicle stop for one of these makeshift roadblocks, we did see some cars stop to give money to children who were filling in potholes in the road with rocks, a reward for a more socially responsible form of entrepreneurship.
