A Pulitzer for the King
Updated Monday, April 7, 2003, at 7:04 PM ET
In announcing Washington Post columnist Colbert I. King's Pulitzer Prize for commentary today, the committee lauded him for op-eds "that speak to people in power with ferocity and wisdom." In January, Slate's Jack Shafer gave King a "Press Box" shout-out, comparing the columnist to dogged great Mike Royko, and praising him for his sharp local criticism and willingness to name names. Shafer also slammed the Post for hiding King's gems in the Saturday paper. Perhaps, post-Pulitzer, that will change.
