Picasso, Nude in Black Armchair, 1932. All Picasso's nudes of this period rework Matisse's. The gently cradled head has Matisse's voluptuousness; the contrast of black with flaring orange comes from Matisse's palette. But Picasso is semiotic where Matisse was representational. Picasso's nude says "nude"—or rather "breast, belly, mound of Venus, profile"—rather than trying to be one.
